Here at Tang Hall our principal aim is to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in Mathematics. We provide opportunities for children to experience aspirational learning. The school uses a variety of teaching and learning styles in maths lessons to support the different learning styles of the children. We also use investigation and exploration to develop the children’s own mathematical reasoning.

As part of our daily Maths lessons we use a programme called Big Maths. This follows a daily programme called CLIC which supports every child to become more confident with number work and calculation. It is important for children to be able to understand how numbers work so that they can use this understanding to solve problems.
Big maths lessons are fast, fun and fantastic. Children work on whiteboards and share their answers with their teachers and classmates. This fast pace helps the children to understand the importance of calculating maths facts quickly rather than counting on fingers.
Big Maths includes a variety of characters to make Maths more fun. They work together to help Maths make sense.
The four parts of our daily CLIC session are:
Counting Learn its It’s nothing new Calculation
Counting.
Children will count forwards, backwards, in various steps and will read and write numbers. The children will learn to count in these steps from any number not just from 0.
Learn its
Learn its are addition facts and times table facts. There are 72 learn its in total. 36 addition learn its and 36 multiplication learn its. These are facts that the children need to learn off by heart so that they can give the answer instantly when asked.
‘Learn Its’ by Year Group
Reception – Doubles of 1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 and 2+1 = 3 and 2+3 = 5
Year 1 – Doubles of 6, 7 ,8 ,9 and numbers which make 10 (2+8, 7+3)
Year 2 Remainder of 1 digit + 1 digit facts (eg 9+7=16)
Year 3 – focus on x3 x4 x9 tables facts
Year 4 – the six remaining facts (6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, 7x8,8x8,) and 36 Addition Learn Its
Year 5 and 6  all 72 Learn Its.

It’s nothing new
This is a very important aspect of CLIC. This is where we link what we know to other examples.
If the children know that 5 things and 3 things are always 8 things then the things can be changed. For example change the ‘thing’ to tens, 5 tens + 3 tens = 8 tens. This also supports the children to use amounts and measures such as ml, cm and £.
Calculation
This aspect of CLIC is when our children use their knowledge to develop their formal calculation methods.
Big Maths Beat That
Big Maths Beat That is a weekly timed test of the Learn its. The aim is to improve their score by one each time
Tang Hall Times Table Challenge.
In Years 16 the children are involved in a weekly Times Table challenge, they take home a particular Multiplication table to learn and are then challenged in class. This will include multiplication facts and division facts.
